Deacon Tony reflects: Third Sunday of Easter

It is difficult for us to comprehend just what the disciples went through that first Easter. They had witnessed their teacher being taken away and brutally executed.

Deacon Tony reflects: Divine Mercy Sunday

Thomas, like many of his contemporary Jews, looked for signs. His faith was based on what he could see and what he could read into the signs which he saw.

HOLY SPIRIT RETREAT DAY AT ST. BEDE’S
On 27th April we welcome ADoRE (Alton Day of Renewal) who will lead a special retreat day on receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit, for the building up of the Church. Many people mistakenly think that Joel’s prophecy “I will pour out my Spirit on all” applies only to the Apostles and other special Saints; but Vatican 2 clarified that the Holy Spirit “distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank.” The free mini-retreat will explain in more depth how the gifts of the Holy Spirit are made available to all baptised people and it is our privilege and responsibility to use them to spread the good news of our faith,
The day starts with Adoration at 9.30am and Mass at 10.00 followed by a coffee break. At 11.15 the programme continues with Praise & Worship, Prophecy and Prayer, and an inspiring talk by Kristina Cooper. Lunch break is at 1,00 – please bring food for a shared picnic lunch.
In the afternoon there will be Healing prayer ministry. The retreat finishes at 3.30pm. The morning session can also be viewed by Live-stream on Zoom but you need to register in advance – go to bit.ly/ADOREAPR2024

Deacon Tony reflects: Good Friday

A time to ponder; to think about the sacrifice Jesus made for us and to marvel that if we were the only person in the world, Jesus would still have died to save us and that applies to everyone. If that isn’t a great reason to reflect and be thankful, I’m not sure what is.

YOU WILL BE MY WITNESSES
This is the title of the Ten-Year Mission Plan which has now been launched in our Diocese. Over the next ten years all our Pastoral Areas will work to lay the foundations of a Vibrant Diocese for Future Generations. What part can I play? Pick up a leaflet from the Cloister to find out more.

NO GREATER LOVE: A BIBLICAL WALK THROUGH CHRIST’S PASSION

Our No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion Lenten program ends this Monday with Jesus at His crucifixion on Calvary.

This Monday we examine the Seven Last Words spoken by Jesus on the Cross. For centuries, Christ’s “Seven Last Words” have been the subject of many sermons, books, devotions, and musical pieces. These sayings are not merely spoken to the world in general, but they are given by Christ as personal words spoken to you. Before Jesus died, he was thinking of you and what you would be going through this year, this month, this day. He is giving you a message of encouragement and comfort as his final act before his death.

Filmed on location in the Holy Land, experience the sights and delve into Old Testament prophecies, messianic expectations, biblical symbolism, and historical context that shed light on the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death. Gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s immeasurable and unconditional love for you—grow closer to Jesus than you ever have before.

From 7.30 to 9 pm this Monday 18th March. To register, follow this link:

NO GREATER LOVE: A BIBLICAL WALK THROUGH CHRIST’S PASSION

Our No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion Lenten program continues as we walk step-by-step with Jesus on His journey from His agony in the garden to His crucifixion on Calvary.

This Monday we will consider what happened as Christ carried his cross as well as what usually happened in Roman crucifixions in general. We will unpack the specific events surrounding Christ’s crucifixion, such as his clothes being divided, the three hours of darkness, the Roman centurion’s statement, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54), the tearing of the temple veil, the unbroken bones of Jesus, the blood and water flowing from his side, and the circumstances of his burial.

Deacon Tony reflects: Standing up for injustice

When we think about the Gospel, how do we react when we see something which is not right? Are we passive about it or do we react? Jesus was not passive, Jesus stood up for what is right and obeyed his Father.

This Monday we join in at the trial of Jesus. The Sanhedrin do not have the authority to carry out capital punishment; they must work with the Roman governor Pontius Pilate and convince him to crucify Jesus. Pilate recognizes that Jesus is innocent, but the chief priests keep pressing him. Pilate sends Jesus off to be scourged and crowned with thorns, hoping that will placate the Jewish leaders. But when his loyalty to Caesar is questioned, Pilate caves and sends the innocent Jesus off to be crucified.
